Matt Shakman, who directed WandaVision and now The Fantastic Four: First Steps, recently broke his silence on Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch fate after Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. For those unfamiliar, she initially is behind America Chavez so that she can leverage her powers and fulfill her desire to be with her children.
However, during the final moments, she eventually has a change of heart and decides to destroy the Darkhold. In the process, she uses her powers to bring down Mount Wundagore, with the collapse appearing to have buried her beneath it. Since her presumed death, many have hoped for her return and have constantly wondered if she died in the first place. Here’s what Shakman said.
Matt Shakman Reveals Whether Scarlet Witch Is Really ‘Gone’
Shakman recently sat down with ScreenRant to promote The Fantastic Four: First Steps, set to release on July 25. He initially explained how shooting the upcoming movie was a similar experience to that of filming the sitcom-themed WandaVision.
Explaining the process in detail, he said, “Like rehearsal and being really specific and world-building from the smallest thing up. When we were doing sitcoms, we went and studied every sitcom there was. We talked to the guy who was the world’s expert on laugh tracks. We watched old prints of Bewitched [to see] what [it looked] like when it was filmed, as opposed to the transfers we all watch in syndication years later.”
He elaborated on how they did a similar thing while bringing to life the Pedro Pascal-led movie. He added,” And it was the same thing here. We went to the World’s Fair in New York, we went to JPL, we looked at old films. We had a film society at Pinewood where we would watch these movies from the ’60s every week and try to pull from it. We looked at palette reference and color reference and old lenses and, you name it, we did everything we could to get as close to being authentic as we could.”
In continuation of the conversation, Shakman was asked about Scarlet Witch’s fate and whether she has truly gone. To this, he replied, “Wanda’s never gone.” This one-liner statement reassures fans that there are still chances of the beloved witch’s appearance in the future. However, it remains to be seen in which project Marvel Studios incorporates her next.
