Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler Sign On For Miami Vice ’85

Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler have signed on for Miami Vice ‘85. The movie is inspired by the pilot episode and the first season of the 80s television show.

The original Miami Vice series is set during the city’s glamorous but drug-fueled era, where corruption and high fashion coexisted.

Jordan and Butler will portray Miami detectives Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and James “Sonny” Crockett, respectively.

Miami Vice ’85 will be directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) and written by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) and Eric Warren Singer (Only the Brave). The film is set for theatrical release in 2028.

Hollywood’s New Leading Men

The news comes after Jordan’s Best Actor Oscar win for the box-office monster release, Sinners, with his directing partner, Ryan Coogler. Jordan will sit in the director’s chair for his next project, The Thomas Crown Affair, which will be released on March 5, 2027.

Austin, who was also up for the best actor Oscar, returns to the big screen following his portrayal of Elvis. The BAFTA and Golden Globe winner was also in Dune: Part 2, The Bikeriders, and Masters of the Air.

Miami Vice: An American Crime Drama

The new adaptation follows Miami Vice, the 2006 movie starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, which tried to capture the cool of the television show, but it received a 47 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Critics felt the film fell short of what audiences had come to expect after experiencing Phillip Michael Thomas, Don Johnson, and director Michael Mann’s earlier films.

The television show ran from 1984 to 1989. It followed “Sonny” and “Rico” as they stylishly moved as detectives in Miami-Dade during the 1980s, battling drug cartels and criminals. The show won four primetime Emmys.
